Terms of use
The terms, in plain words.
These terms cover the Niyam app and this website. By using either, you agree to them. They are short, and we have kept them plain.
Effective 29 October 2026 · Niyam for iPhone and Android, developed by Mayank Jain
Using Niyam
Niyam is a companion for keeping vrats: it works out the dates and times for your city and your family’s tradition, and reminds you what to do and when. You may use it for your own practice and your family’s.
Please don’t copy, sell or redistribute the app, take it apart to build a competing product, or use it in a way that breaks the law or harms others.
Dates, times and traditions
Niyam works out every date and time on your phone, with the Drik Panchang method: a JPL ephemeris, the Lahiri ayanamsa, and sunrise at the Sun’s upper edge for your own place. We take care to get them right, and every date says why it falls where it does.
Traditions differ, though. Your family, temple or priest may keep a vrat on another day, and when a deciding moment falls close to a boundary, calendars can disagree. Niyam marks these as a close call. When in doubt, follow your own tradition. Niyam explains dates; it does not settle religious questions for you.
The dates on this website are examples for a few cities, worked out ahead of time. The app works them out for your exact place.
Fasting and your health
Niyam is not medical advice. If you are unwell, pregnant or take regular medicine, many families keep a gentler fast. Ask your doctor what is safe for you, and stop a fast if you feel unwell.
Reminders
Your phone’s operating system schedules and delivers Niyam’s reminders. Focus, Do Not Disturb, Low Power Mode, battery saving, a restart or a software update can delay or silence them, and Niyam cannot guarantee that each one arrives on time. When a time matters to you, such as the window to break a fast, please check it in the app as well.
Your data
Everything you add to Niyam stays on your phone; the privacy policy explains what that covers. Because nothing is kept on a server, deleting the app deletes your data, and we cannot restore it. You can save a copy at any time from My Niyam → Privacy and data.
Place search and Google
When you search for a city by name, Niyam uses Google Maps. By using place search you agree to the Google Terms of Service and the Google Maps Additional Terms of Service, and the Google Privacy Policy applies to those searches. Without place search, Niyam works fully offline.
Price and purchases
Niyam is free to download and use. If we add an optional paid upgrade, it will be a one-time purchase through the App Store or Google Play, never a subscription, and the store’s own payment and refund rules will apply to it.
The App Store and Google Play
You get Niyam from Apple’s App Store or Google Play, and their terms apply to the download. These terms are between you and the developer, not Apple or Google, and the developer alone is responsible for the app and its support.
If you use Niyam on an Apple device, Apple’s Standard License Agreement also applies. Apple has no duty to maintain or support the app, and is not responsible for any claims about it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them.
No warranty
Niyam is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind. To the extent the law allows, the developer is not liable for any loss that comes from using Niyam or from not being able to use it, including a missed, early or late fast. Nothing in these terms limits rights that the law where you live gives you and that cannot be waived.
Changes and the law
We may update these terms as Niyam changes. The new version will be posted here with a new effective date, and using Niyam after that means you accept it. You can stop using Niyam at any time by deleting the app.
These terms are governed by the laws of India.
